Free Blood Pressure Screening

The first Wednesday of every month, from 1:00-2:00pm a nurse from Our Lady of Consolation Residence is available to conduct free blood pressure screenings and answer questions regarding hypertension. This program is available to all adult patrons and no appointment is necessary.

Homebound Services

If you cannot physically come into the library due to temporary or permanent health conditions, and have no other way to pick up library materials, please call our Reference Desk to arrange for homebound library service. Depending on your needs, the librarians will pick out titles for you based on your interest areas.  For more information on eligibility and other aspects of the program, please call the Reference Desk of the library.

Long Island Talking Book Library

A free federally sponsored library service for Nassau-Suffolk residents who cannot hold or see well enough to read conventional print books or magazines, The Long Island Talking Book Library has over 100,000 professionally recorded books and magazines available for your listening pleasure. These materials and the special equipment needed to play them can be mailed right to your home. Medical certification of need is required. AARP 55 Alive Driver Safety Program

Reduce your liability insurance by 10% a year for three years and remove up to four points from your license. This course is usually held once a month at the library (except in July and August) and costs $10 (check payable to AARP at time of registration) Please contact the Adult Reference Desk for exact dates of this program.  

AARP Tax Help

Representatives of AARP trained by the IRS provide free assistance in completing tax forms. Available from February through mid-April.  Please contact the Reference Desk for exact dates and to make appointments.

Interloan & Direct Access of Materials

Are you aware that you can request library materials from among the more than 8 million items held in Suffolk’s 56 public libraries? Did you know you can use your card to check out materials in those Suffolk libraries? Interested in obtaining Descriptive Narration Videos? Our librarians can assist you in obtaining materials through inter-library loan and direct access from other Suffolk County libraries. Contact the Reference Desk for details.

Large Print Collection

Our large print book collection is constantly being updated. Included in this collection are bestsellers, fiction, mysteries, biographies, and non-fiction titles.

Audio Books on CD and Cassette

Our audio collection includes fiction and nonfiction titles, in both CD and cassette formats. Many of these titles are unabridged editions, often read by the authors. And of course, we have a wide range of music CDs to choose from.

Senior Programming

Every month the library offers a variety of events, programs, and workshops geared toward our senior patrons. These include concerts, health related workshops, fitness classes, financial seminars, and movies.  In May we celebrate Senior Month with special activities. Zoom Text Computer Access

Zoom Text is a powerful computer access solution designed for the visually impaired. Consisting of two adaptive technologies, screen magnification and screen reading, Zoom Text allows you to see and hear everything on the computer screen, providing complete access to applications, documents, e-mail, and the Internet. Our Zoom Text computer is in the Adult Reference area of the Library.

Reading System

A CCTV Reader is an magnification system that captures a video image of printed materials and displays it on a television screen so that it may be read more comfortably by the visually impaired.  With this device users can view a wide range of printed materials including catalogs, photographs, books, magazines, or letter, while adjusting the size, contrast, and color of the image. Located near the Adult Reference Desk, this device was a gift of the Babylon Lions Club.

Library Adventures Bus Trips

The library sponsors frequent bus trips to exciting destinations in New York and surrounding states. Costs include transportation, admissions, gratuity, and, often, lunch. Recent destinations include the Philadelphia Flower Show, Ellis Island and Little Italy, Longwood Gardens, Mohonk Mountain House, Long Island Gold Coast Mansions, and Amish Country. Senior Mentoring for Computers

West Islip High School student volunteers are available to assist our senior patrons learn how to use a computer. Please stop by the Adult Reference Desk to learn how to sign up for this program.
